Liberal quantities have been applied Derek. She drinks them all, smiles sweetly at me and demands more.

Update on my own experiences – I’ve just emptied my first full tank after replacing the stat… the mpg is exactly the same running at 88 degrees as at 56, ie 42mpg

One wonders why, if it doesn’t give you better mpg, it’s worth bringing the engine up to running temp at all… maybe just to keep water out of the oil!

That doesn't tally with the feedback from my customers who report to me after I've fitted a new diesel stat.
I usually leave it a couple of weeks before sending a courtesy message.
Most owners report back with an improvement of anywhere between 3-6 MPG.

Some affidavits are in my blog somewhere!!

In 2002, I bought a 2000 my 75 diesel (30K on the clock) and was very disappointed with its performance below 2000rpm. My local Rover dealer had it checked out on their T4 and reported no faults. Their foreman mechanic drove the car and said it was sluggish but said "standard cars are like that". (He had a 75 diesel with a remap).

I was not satisfied so had my own car remapped to 140 bhp and yes it performed notably better above 2000 rpm but no change below that.

Having read up on problems with 75 diesels, I then disconnected the MAF and - wow! what a difference.

However, my joy was not unconfined - the car would occasionally cut out completely (at the most inconvenient times!). Switching off then back on the car would restart and run ok for another day or so until it happened again.

So, I bit the bullet and bought and fitted a new Bosch MAF.

I had no further problems and the car performed really well for the remaining time that I owned it.

Default De-MAF progress

Well it was September 2012 when I removed the MAF and blanked off the hole,
Since then I have only done short journeys, school run etc and I have averaged 34.7 mpg over this period, for a 75 cdti tourer 131bhp auto I am well pleased as prior to MAF removal I was only getting from NEW 26 mpg,
As I stated it is the best Mod I have done,

That's about the same as my petrol V6 Omega estate auto!

Does it not indicate that the MAF does have quite an effect on the functioning of the engine - in your case negative?

Probably because the MAF was so badly out of spec?

Default Maf

I bought from there too. I have no problems and, since it has a two year guarantee I thought it worth a go.
