Often wondered what would Rain-X be like applied to a car body. The effect something similar?

That's weird! I happened across this product on another forum just last night.

I've been on the lookout for nano-coatings for a while, primarily to coat all my kayaking gear, and have been keeping a close eye on Neverwet's website www.neverwet.com in the hope that this might become available to the general public. Alas it remains unavailable at present.

Now Ultra Ever Dry has cropped up and it appears to only be available in the US of A and Canada.

There is a third product of particular interest though...Ceracoat. www.ceracoatdirect.com which is available to buy here in the UK, albeit shipped from mainland Europe. I haven't tried it yet so I don't know how effective it really is, but it may well be worth a closer inspection as they produce formulations for fabrics (car interior, clothing etc), painted surfaces (car exterior) and glass (car windows).

At 25 Euro's for 200ml I can't justify the cost right now (I'm very poor at this time of year) but when I do get some I'll let you know how I get on with it.

There are dozens of similar hydrophobic coatings that never make it really big. Glass treatments are the most popular of course and you can now get self-cleaning plate glass for houses/industry from the big producers like Pilkington. Generally speaking, they're great for DIY type experimenting, but the big step will be when cars come out the factory with a stay clean finish. Personally I don't think it will happen. These materials aren't revolutionary inventions and have been around industrial labs for decades. IMO the high price reflects the cost of the hype rather than the substance.

Keep us posted - I can see a big market for this. Just don't coat your dip-stick with it!

There are already plenty of products out that do that for water on car bodies. They aren't oil repellent though, at least not so much. They are basically like a highly durable rain-x for paint (rain-x is rubbish). They are basically nano scale chemically bonding ceramics that become the outermost layer of your cars paint.

Their other advantage is that they are harder than the paint, so protect it from scratches. Im using one right now and the car basically cleans itself and is resistant to the occasional bad washing practice..

The issue with these super coatings as in the video is that they dont leave the car with a nice finish, so that has to be worked on.

You can get the current generation ceramic coatings for paint, plastic, glass and textiles. Perfect for stain proofing the interior.

very clever and a great idea but from the video everything that has been treated looks green and has a dull finish.
if it could be developed clear and leave a nice shine for paintwork then it would be a great success.
