I think the next question is, is your fan working on low speed? This is what cools the air for the AC, so if the fan isn't working, you will get a short blast of cold air but then ambient temperature air because there is nothing to cool it (unless you are driving at speed, in which case the air entering the grille will provide some cooling). Quite a few of us are having this problem at present and there are several threads about it on the Technical Help forum.

Doh, must be mis-remembering then!

Resistor fix was done a couple of years ago, runs on slow speed with aircon on, hi speed if its really hot outside.

Of course it did. The LCD display simply shows the chosen target temperature. It is not affected by the actual cabin temperature.

The air conditioning system calls for a higher fan speed when the refrigerant pressure increases. That is not necessarily related to the ambient air temperature. For example, if all the condenser fins have corroded and fallen off, the refrigerant pressure will increase and the fan speed will be faster. The outside temperature might be quite mild.
