Yes, versatility was probably why the Bridgeport design / name became a byword for mills.

Tom Seniors were very good as well though.

I was lucky enough to buy a series 1 Bridgeport, with the J head, for my workshop 6 or 7 years ago.

And yes, prices for Colchester (Lathes), Bridgeport (Mills), Meddings (Drills) etc. are going through the roof.

Regards

Mike

You would need to use it a lot to get any value out of it at that price.---

would not get used a lot, it would be a toy. It would pay for itself in fun and satisfaction of making something. I like tools, I like owning tools, I like fixing things and I like making things. Over the years I have bought tools just to do one job, this makes each job expensive but the satisfaction of completing the task is immense and over the years those single job tools have gone on to be used many times.

I put a link in an earlier reply to a combined milling machine and lathe, it was up for £750 but went for £1,400 but I did not know enough to buy it. For small things which is what I would do it could have been ideal.

Something like this would likely fit the bill. A Bridgeport copy which have int40 rather than the useless r8 collet tooling size.

Just be mindful 90% of tooling will be 3 phase 415v and you’ll either need a big vfd, rotary phase converter or two extra phases running to your workshop
If you don’t have the option of three phase already.
Also you’ll likely have to collect and most mills that are actually useful (not the bench mounted drilling machines or those attached to lathes which both have huge limitations) weigh around a ton. To get something like that delivered would be reasonably expensive. You’ll also want a load of tooling so I’d budget a good £500 on top.
