Help me with a 75 or Jag XF dilemma?
I'm toying with the idea of replacing my 75 with an XF and need your thoughts about it.
I own a Y plate 75 Club SE (with extras), which I love to bits, as it has character that modern motors just don't have, but I'm massively disappointed in it's driving performance, with it being a 2.0 KV6 auto and it can't pull the skin off a rice pudding, unless you rev it to death, which results in petrol consumption more akin to an XJ12 Jag of old and is not the way I want to drive a car. For info, it's in good nick and I bought it with 39k on the clock for £1300. I spent around £900 for a good service and the belts and it's now done 50k. The investment here, while still modest, is already twice more than I've ever paid for a car. My problem is that I'm now seeing these XFs at sub £10,000 and they're starting to appeal very strongly. Not because of the looks, which I think are bland at best, but because of the practicality. I could get a 2.7 or 3.0 diesel auto and they'll nudge double the early 20's to the gallon I'm currently getting, for instance. Then there's all the mod cons, of course. And the fact that it will just out-perform my Rover in any driving sense. The only downside I can see is if something goes majorly wrong, but 75's aren't cheap to run either, are they? The £10k would be a massive jump up but I'm fortunate in that I could lay that out in cash (I work seven days a week), but probably won't, which is where £50 a week finance might appeal. I'd probably save a chunk of that in fuel alone. The last point is, my ideal solution of buying a Jag and keeping the 75 can't happen. I can only have one car. I'm just thinking it's a more modern motor, with leather and flappy paddles and Bluetooth and all that (extras I don't even want, tbh, although seat warming in winter would be nice, an FBH even better). I don't know

Jag are very good cars in my opinion. I do like them very much too. Just go with your heart. If you want it, go get it

I will have the same dilemma some time soon and as much as I love my 75 it will have to go some day and a Jaguar (more likely diesel XJ for me) appeals as replacement. I say bite the bullet as it will have to happen one day and from a purely economic point of view it will pay for itself (I also have this dilemma as I currently do 70 miles a day with a 2.5V6 auto).

Have a word with Duotone, he moved onto Jags, but came back to the 75... as indeed many others have done

Whereas the 75 is a cut above the cars the company produced at the time. That's part of my dilemma

The total lack of character. I suspect a 260 might be the solution. But the running costs Hopefully Duotone might pipe up with some solid advice

I strongly suspect that an XF is somewhere in the future for me!
All I would ask, is that have you driven one yet? |

My cousin is one of them who likes to change their car ever 3 years, with a brand new one. After having a Toyota Rav 4 for 3 years she went on to a brand new 3.0 diesel XF. I think it lasted under two years as it was always in for warranty work on issues of electrics and the like. She liked the Rav 4 better and so went back to a 4x4 with a Brand new Merc ML last year...the relevance to Rover - her husband who works away (from Teesside) in Aberdeen all week has a 15 year old Rover 600 to come home to to potter around in - keep saying he should upgrade to a Rover 75

XF is a brilliant designed car but! They to are now getting on and with miles to match only spells mega expence like all modern cars. As long as you can afford to repair it buy it, or get one from a dealer with good warranty.

Whilst I love my 75's, and would not give them up, I would not have a dilema when the time comes to replace my Rovers.
The XF is in a different league. Circumstances permitting at the time, the only car that I see as a worthy replacement for my Omega V6 Estate is an XF Sportbrake. |
