Default 75 CDTi - Radiator fan keeps turning on and off

Hi all

Last year I installed the inline thermostat into the top radiator hose and instantly started to see the engine reach operating temperature - something it hadn't done for the previous 12 months. Thanks to DMRG for the very quick delivery!

I have hardly used the car during lockdown but I have noticed that the engine fan now keeps turning on and off repeatedly, no matter how long or short the journey. I can only assume that now that the engine is actually heating up, the original thermostat now thinks that the engine temp is too high and attempts to reduce this by running the fan. It runs for about 10 seconds with a 30 second break on a continuous cycle.

Is there an easy fix to this does anybody know?

Many thanks

Tingers

In excess of 165,000 miles and still hanging in there despite the disconcerting knock from the front...

I'm assuming that the air con is on whilst it doing it ? Switch it off and see if the problem stops. If so, your fan's low speed has failed. If you can see a silver resistor at the two o'clock position through the grille ,then happy days and just replace it. If not , you'll probably have to replace the fan or leave the air con switched to econ mode.

Well I'll never! Just taken the car out for a quick 18 mile spin with the aircon turned off and - nothing! Mind you - when I turned it back on again it still didn't fire up as it normally does but it sounds as if that's the issue. I'll check out replacement bits at the weekend.

Many thanks for the quick reply

That knock is the car telling you to find and fix it before the front wheel drops off.-----

PS. The thermostat doesn't say anything to any other part of the car, it just goes quietly about its job.--Lol.

Hiya and thanks! My car has been starting to shout for the last couple of weeks! It sounds very similar to when the drop links 'go', despite mine only having done a few thousand miles each side (they were replaced in January 2021). No worries - like the mechanical version of Bob the Builder - we can fix it!

Thanks
