Window screech: replace with another old or buy repair kit?
Like many others I am suffering from driver's window screech. I have read some of the many posts here but am still wondering if it is worth replacing with another used one or buying the kit (about £15 or so) listed on eBay oddly from Deutschland of all places. I can't see that the screech has definitively been tracked to the electric motor itself - which is not part of any kit - or the cables and pulleys/capstan which are.
So has anyone bought the kit and found that this has cured the noise?

Dave it will most likely be grit and or dirt in the rubber seals, they need cleaning out at least once a year to help the window open smoothly.
1 2 3 use a damp rag and a new clean part of the rag after each pass. 4 5

Driver's window screech
My window screech was due to fine dirt in the air ending up in the 'trough' where the outer seal touches the glass, not the mechanical parts behind the door card. If not cleaned out regularly this grit acts as a thin line abrasive which scores the glass vertically and makes the screeching sound as well.
Oops, Sorry Arctic, you just pipped me, but what a much better illustration. Geoff. Last edited by GeoffWW; 6th September 2021 at 08:50.. |

Yes thanks to both of you above: that's what I'd have thought, but reading many of the old posts on this recurrent subject opinions differ - oiling the Bowden cables, cleaning out rust etc. Twas ever thus.

Spot on as ever Steve. I used this CIF spray to dribble cleaner along the window + the toothbrush to clean the rubber guides all round the frame, and cleaned with a rag wrapped round an old thin but flexible cabinet scraper to poke down the glass. Amazed what crud came off. And I nearly ordered up a replacement regulator . . .
Screech gone, wallet safe.
