Default Good job I fitted my own "dumb" home EV charger.

The powers that be want all home EV chargers to be of the Smart variety so they can switch them off for nine hours/day to prevent blackouts

https://notalotofpeopleknowthat.word...ent-blackouts/

Electric car charging points in people’s homes will be preset to switch off for nine hours each weekday at times of peak demand because ministers fear blackouts on the National Grid.
Under regulations that will come into force in May, new chargers in the home and workplace will be automatically set not to function from 8am to 11am and 4pm to 10pm. Public chargers and rapid chargers, on motorways and A-roads, will be exempt.

The government is also taking powers to impose a “randomised delay” of up to 30 minutes at other times to avoid pressure on the grid if there is a scramble among motorists to recharge their batteries at the same time.
There are only 300,000 battery electric vehicles (EVs) on the UK’s roads.

Surely that's potentially going to make it worse, as some cars would be on charge at various times of the day, but restricting charging times will surely just lead to more cars being charged at the same time.

Personally for me, I'd get home and put the car on charge around 7am, it'd charge for an hour then off for 3, then it'd charge for 5 hours before switching off again, I'd drive to work 5-6pm, and then not be able to charge it again until the following morning.

Maybe get a home charger installed soon so I can charge when I want, next car will at least be a hybrid.

restricting the charging times, I cant see how that is helpful.

It does seem we solve one problem to create another.
Do all new house builds have to have a home charging point? For how many cars to charge at once should there be charging for at home in these new builds?

According to the national grids big cheese Graham Cooper the grid would be able to cope with 'X' amount of millions of EV's before they would need more electricity production. Plus these new smart meters will be able to do V2G (vehicle to grid) where the national grid would have all these EV's to tap to balance the grid equivalent to a dozen power stations after the ICE ban in 2030 so I've read.

Yes all new house builds will have to have a dedicated electrical outlet for BEV's, I don't know how many BEV's you'd be able to charge at one time.

Afraid you all may be too late. My Council received a sales pitch over a year ago, which I attended, and the ability to switch off EV chargers at any time was already in place. Put me off completely - just don't like big brother tactics.

On my travels around th country i noticed yesterday that Drax was on full steam. Last months lack of wind seams to have heated things up a bit making th market jump a extra 400 quid a M/watt whole sale....

Will forward planning ever be used in this short termst world??

Of course, the really clever solution would be to make everyone work night shifts. There would then be enough network capacity to charge EV's during the day.

I really should get a job in the government's strategic planning department.
