Default insurance

this topic comes up every so often.
wife rang for a quote instead of just renewing and saved £182.
why oh why apart from ripping off their customers, do insurance companies send out over inflated renewal quotes?

fwiw:-

Just insured my Tourer CDTI, £240 fully comp on a multi car policy, no performance mods but mods.
My saloon CDT last year with mods including a remap was £300, just rang
HIC which may be part of Adrian flux and down to £260 but with a couple of add on's its nearly £300. Ccant recall add on's, they are going to email me what they are, key care is one I think

'Cos plenty don't bother shopping around and just accept the quote they are offered.

Part of the answer has been provided by topman above. The other part is that those who feel they are in the know expect to get a price reduction by phoning up. People want to negotiate the price downwards on everything. It's chicken and egg......

Renewal letter from Admiral yesterday on the wife's Citroen. Last year, £385, this year, £464. No change in circumstances.

Tried Confused and got Halifax and Lloyds (??) offering matching cover for £223. Didn't even know banks and building societies did insurance. Perhaps I can open an ISA at Direct Line

Go back and tell Admiral and they might even better the new quote - they did for me.
