The last real Rover
I learnt to drive in a P4 110, feels like yesterday , but was 40 odd years ago. I have two p4's currently, one was my daily driver until recently, and the other a 1950 Cyclopes, currently being seriously modified (don't worry, no economically restorable Cyclopes are being harmed in this process).
In the past I've had a couple of V8 P6's and loved them too. I've always considered the P6 to be the last real Rover. SD1, nice, but to me Leyland. Some of the Honda Rovers are great cars too, I'm told, but to me Honda. Had our near poverty spec 1.8 club just a few weeks now. It's a Rover from the ground up. Loving it. |

I totally agree, in that the P6 was a superb car, and arguably the last pure Rover.
However, the 75 runs it a very close second, if not it's equal. There are two cars, out of the 50+ that I've owned, that I really regret parting with. The P6 2000TC, and a Jaguar 420 (not the Rover 420, in my signature) Regards Mike

The Sd1 was the end of proper Rovers for me. Honda and BMW involvement there after diluted the brand.

I am a fan of the P6 too.
It was in a 2000TC that I learnt to drive, at a time when they were still in production. I had a 3500S for many years and wish I had kept it. When I bought my first Rover 75, it was like putting an old favourite jacket on. To me, the car has captured some of the soul of the of the old P6.

We had a 3500S and a 3500 and both died of tinworm. Mostly on rear inner wings and sills. Also helped me to learn to weld neatly! Great towcars and both took us to Spain and Italy (via Switzerland towing caravans for hols.). Global warming is down to me! Sorry!😉

Driving down through Hampshire, on my way to a customer, and out of the corner of my eye; I “clocked” a black Jaguar 420 on a garage forecourt.
It had a for sale sticker on the windscreen. As I had recently sold a 1964 white (ex police) 3.4 manual Jaguar S type, I doubled back out of curiosity. I was not in the market for a change of car, as we had recently bought a new house. I then went on to my customer, having had a test drive and with a deposit, on the 1968 420. It transpired that it had been a cancelled export order, for California. Upon cancellation, Jaguar took it off the production line, and converted it to RHD. I became approximately the 4th owner of this Black, automatic 420, with all round green tinted windows, cream upholstery and chrome wire wheels. Totally reliable, and as I said in my earlier post; one of two cars that I really do regret selling.
