check if the sound is coming from inside the door. It would be relatively common for the regulator to fail, and when mine did it made a lot fo creaking noises before the cable snapped. It is quite an easy fix, by way of replacement (Mickyboy is where I got my replacement - highly recommended trader). A bit of silicone spray in the window channels could help to eliminate sticky rubbers.

If it does turn out to be that, grease all the moving parts of the regulator before fitting.

Very good advice, I use silicone spray on my own too, I also have plenty of regulators in stock at the moment too, they seem to fail now that they are on average 18 years old

The creaking or rattling is coming from the top of the windows when closed, if they are opened slightly the noise goes

Sprayed silicone WD40 on the door seal and window rubbers which softened them up but this seems to have made the noise worse

are the rubbers in place correctly? If the rattling is coming from the top of the doors, something must be loose to be moving to make a noise. I think you should now take off the door car to make sure everything is intact and in the correct position (check the condition of the bowden cables whilst they are off too). Check the rubber in the runners and the runners themselves are secure. Check to the glass is secure to the mounts, with the mounts themselves secure.

LOL

I had the same issue. used to play a game of just cracking it down by 1mm or something and the noise would go. Actually I think it was being made by the inner waist rail despite sounding like the top, anyway I lost my temper and gave the glass a good push and pull (inside to out, not up and down) when it was about halfway down, noise disappeared and has never come back since.

The creaking comes from the mechanisms Russ, the only cure is to change them I’m afraid.

I think I've actually described the fault wrongly, it is more of a plasticky rattle from the top of the doors.
As it's got worse since I used the silicone I'm hopeful it's in that area.
I've ordered some alcohol cleaner and that German rubber restorer so will see how I get on
