We tend to do our shopping in places where parking charges do not apply. So we add to the problems that most towns now have with ever decreasing footfall.

Where we live the County Council issues Parking Clocks that cost £25 a year but for that you can use it in all of the NFDC Car Parks. Which when you consider that before Putins Novichok attack, Salisbury was charging £5 for a couple of hours is very good value.

Especially as the parking clock can be lent to our visitors who stay with us and so can use it when we have no need of it. Everyone says what a brilliant system!

So whereas a weekly shop in Salisbury would have cost c. £250 a year we can go anywhere in the NFDC area for an annual fee of £25.

Little wonder then that we tended not to shop in Wiltshire!

High Parking Charges destroy Town centres.

I've am lucky in that physically I can walk a fair distance, which means that if I need to park, it's not in car parks. I'm a dinosaur when it comes to technology, but then again, it does lead to me not using sites that may use it, so I will never learn.

I struggle with understanding my phone, but I do all my banking online which I find an absolute asset.

my phone is so old it cant doo any of this stuff and my cards are not contactless.

I hope there is a legal loophole that if you cannot pay by coin cos there is no coin machine or it is not working then you cant be ticketed! I am not trying to avoid paying, I just need a means that suits my situation. I'm sure a number of older folk will also be in a similar situation

Actually Ian - that is a really good point. I wonder what the law would say if there was not proper signage as you entered the car park that payment was restricted to a certain method and coins were not accepted?

I believe that “Parking Conditions” must be clearly displayed. It will be interesting to see how it pans out.

Don't own a Smartphone, and have no intention of getting one! Fortunately my local town does not charge for parking, and has a committed policy not to do so. Well done, Wellingborough!

Well done indeed! If only other Towns would follow Wellingborough’s excellent example.

The last village I lived in had free parking for 2hours, over 2 hours was £2 or £4 all day. Pretty reasonable I think. Anyway one day the parish council decided to scrap all parking charges and turn off the machines. Within 2 weeks you couldn't get parked at all on a Saturday cars were just doing loops waiting for a slot. Where everyone came from and what they were doing I don't know it was only a small village, a few shops couple of pubs.

Anyway wasn't long before it went back to the old system.

I used one of these machines in Cheltenham a couple of months ago and a few days later my card was being used to buy all sorts as it had got cloned. I know it was this as this that had cloned the card as only gets used when I have no other option and I had not used it for weeks.

I was refunded all the monies but that will be the last time I use one.

We have the first hour free, after that it’s pay by card or coin. Interestingly no tickets are issued, which saves a walk back to the car.
