Source of problem
OK, got it back home where it starts and runs slightly better but I think I've found the problem. Blows a fine mist of oil smoke out of the exhaust but....when run with the filler cap off, it blows oil smoke out like a steam engine, and out of the water expansion chamber as well. Head gasket failure anyone?

When the head was last off after your cam timing slipped Carl there were concerns about liner number 4 having sunk down below the block, mentioned from your thread at the time:
https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/s...=269010&page=8 Whip the spark plugs out and check their condition - that should tell you if a particular cylinder is causing the problem, and more importantly which one it is. Would pop over and have a look with you but I have just started fitting our new kitchen (well to be precise ripping the old one out) and everything is a bit hectic at the moment. |

re
I'll take a look at it over the weekend and report back. Worst case scenario.....if the liner has slipped beyond reasonable limits, where does that leave me? An engine out job, complete stripdown?

Those compression results look like leaking valves to me, were the valves looked at after the initial overheat and head gasket replacement?

overheating
Mike, it's probably still there, you'll have to dig deep to find it. Although I think it's all tied in with this problem.

Although the engine had overheated in the past Bri, I believe that was before Carl owned the car. The last time it was off was due to the timing slipping when the auxy belt shredded. MGJohn stripped it down and I rebuilt the top end, and I think the head was either a replacement, or had been refurbished with new valves by a local company. It sounds like the head gasket and maybe the slipped liner too.--
The head off first will supply some answers. |

Yep will need the head off for an inspection.
Found this thread Carl: Quote:
Did it overheat when you lost water from the pipe, and/or did it overheat when it failed this time around? If so then that could cause the head gasket to fail. |
