Avon or Bridgestone? Which is best?
Hi,
I'm in need of 2 new tyres. 195/65R15 to be exact. Last time I was in Costco I think the price was circa £55 for Bridgestone. I looked at Black Circles and they have Avon at ~£50. I want to keep cost down. Any advice on which make best or is there anything else I should know (low cost good make I'm not aware of)? Cheers, Jim |

I fitted a pair of Avon on mine, and they work ok.
I picked the Avon simply because they are highly rated in the wet, and at least it's a brand I have heard of.

If you look at the (mandatory) tyre information, all car tyres are given a rating for Dry & wet grip and economy ('A' being the best). And also they are given a dB rating for how much road noise they make. Unfortunately no rating for longevity (mileage before worn out). Use these ratings to help inform your decision. Also sites like blackcircles carry many tyre reviews from the public which can be useful to check. Asking brand v brand makes no sense as they'll be several different options (tyre models) from each brand that could be used.

Well I found that Avons tend to be better value as Bridgestone are a big name and you pay a bit extra for that. Doubt there is much in it performance wise.
Personally I don't put much faith in these modern tyre ratings. Through experience, I've had B wet rated tyres that were poor in the wet and D rated ones that were pretty good. It's the manufacturers that put these ratings on, not an independent body. As far as I'm concerned, they lie!

What would swing it for me would be the fitting service you get at Costco. Used them for many years and cannot praise them enough,in particular the Derby branch.

What tyres do you have on at the moment? I personally will never have mixed tyres on any of my cars, I like to have all four/five tyres the same make & brand.
I have had Bridgestone in the past and found them to be quite noisy on the road, never had Avon so can not comment.

I've been using Avon ZV7s now for a year or so and do prefer them over the other similar priced tyres available. Mine came from blackcircles too but with the mileage that I cover each month, around 1500 miles, they dont last more than 6 months before i have to change them. However, the wear is only ever on the edges, not the whole tread.

I have done over 10k miles with the Avon s on the rear and there is no sign of edge wear.
