Question 2003 Rover 75 Tourer - can't get centre console out because of handbrake

Okay, this is my first post here, but I've got a bit of an issue. I'm removing quite a bit of my interior (thanks to needing to take the carpet out because of water), and I can't seem to get it past the handbrake. It sticks out too far, and blocks me from taking out the centre console bit.

I've looked everywhere (trust me) and I can't seem to find any tutorials or guides that help. I would have checked the Haynes manual, but I'm trying to do this on a budget, and I don't really want to spend a tenner or more on the book.

Is there a special technique for getting the damn thing out? It's proving stubborn. I imagine there's a stupidly easy way to do it I just haven't realised :P

Thanks in advance!

Do not forget to loosen off the adjusting nut on the handbrake to facilitate the console removal. This should help.

Well i have spent a tenner on the book & it says pull the console fully rearwards & lift it up over the handbrake, plus, as above, loosen the adjuster nut, on the handbrake

Pressing the chrome handbrake release button at the same time as lifting the center consol just gives you enough room to get handbrake through the aperture.

I know you seem to need three hands but this is how I did it.

Okay, now, and I kid you not, I can't figure out how to undo the adjuster nut. I know how to do it, but I'm not sure what kind of tool you're supposed to use on a nut that's way down! I presume my tool kit is inadequate?

Finally realised I'd not even come back to say it worked! I managed to get the central console out, now I'm just waiting for a replacement carpet I ordered (plus a few little issues, like figuring out the hideous wiring on the stereo ).

I too have to replace the carpet, it's totally had it. We're there any issues removing the seats etc? Is this a job I'm going to regret starting! Any good threads on this topic?

This thread from Arctic Steve is really about replacing the handbrake compensator but it has lots of good pics that will help towards getting the carpet out;

This one helps with the under-seat airbag etc. connections

and this one helps with removing the whole interior
