Thanks for info though guys, much appreciated. I thought I'd bought a diesel fan/2 speed controller given that the shrouds were the same.

Makes sense the buzzing from the relays would be the PWM signal, turning them on and off very quickly. I'll refit my 3 speed relay box tonight, convert the wiring for use with a 2 wire fan and hopefully get things spinning again!

edit... Simon, I can't see the pictures in the thread you linked to (blocked at work), but it reads as though it's the method to convert the 3 speed 4 wire fan into just running at two speeds by pairing up the brushes rather than rewiring it to work with a 2 wire fan.
