Got a Fairey overdrive on the Landy, , takes the top speed to a blistering 55-60 MPH - only tend to use it in top as moving two gear levers takes time meaning any momentum is lost

Had overdrive on my Triumph GT6 mk3, it was great fun as you did not have to lift off the accelerator to engage it, so as you hit the red line in 3rd engage the overdrive and it was like an instant gear change into top.

I suspose these could be looked at as an early version of 5 speed boxes......

The factory used to be on Archer Rd in Sheffield, it's now a Sainsbury

The social club is still fully functional tho!

If what I've read in the past is to be believed, Laycock downsized hugely after all manufacturers started using 5 speed transmissions, the bulk of their Manufacturing business went.
They relocated to Rother Valley nr Rotherham and now trade under the LUK name

I fitted a VX490 overdrive gearbox to my Bedford CF Ambulance (caravanette conversion). It helped greatly with economy and noise when cruising.

Had one on my Scimitar , did a good job on a long journey but a pain when the oil seal went on the propshaft end , as has been said , once 5 speed gearboxes became more popular that was the beginning of the end of the units , very clever engineering though https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xl9J...4ZPUl_2rk_eGeB

Many Rovers had the LDN Overdrive on 4th gear - optional on the P4 90 1955 to 1959, standard on the 105/105R/105S and later 80, 100 and 110, and all the P5 3 Litre manuals. Rover had a complex system of throttle switches that did not allow the OD to engage on full throttle, or disengage on the overrun, so that changes in and out of OD were smooth. Makes a real difference to highway cruising.

Had a few cars with overdrive back in the day. Made for very relaxed cruising and certainly easier to get used to compared with a twin speed rear axle.
