Out of all the cars I've owned, millage big and small, there's a large difference between the condition of the front subframe from cars with and without one.

I know the replica ones arnt a good fit, but I'd even fit the 1.8t half cover ones over not having one. Which reminds me, I need one for my white diesel.

My car didn't come with one. I spotted a post by someone in regards the original suppliers to Rover of the under guards still selling them.

http://www.hampson-composites.co.uk

Rang them up and they sent off an original no problems about £70 as I recall.

Its quite obvious that the bottom of the engine will remain a fair bit cleaner and less scratched than one without but I don't suppose its the end of the world running about without one.

As regards them falling off, my previous cars one was dangling down and was strapped back up with cable ties by various mechanics working on it.

I got an Arctic branded fixing kit for less than a tenner off Steve at a nano meeting and its solid as a rock, I suppose that the only thing to look out for is that garages replace the tray after working on your car.

My diesel, 190 and v8 all have them , and having seen what the bottom of the engine bay and subframe look like without they’ll be staying on.

I noted the undertray was missing (or not fitted) on my ZT after I bought it. I bought a Turbo short version off eBay, which fitted fine. I thought the coolant system looked a bit vulnerable without, and it would protect the subframe a bit. I can do an oil and filter change with the undertray on, although to get the filter off its a lot less fiddly with the undertray removed!

I keep mine on, it has dropped down low a couple of times, but some new fittings soon sorted that.

I have a very clean engine bay for a car of this age.

Both mine have them. Changed engine oil and filter yesterday. Filter was as clean as when it was put on last year, and 3500 miles ago. Had to put a metal bracket on one of the rear ears because it was slightly broken. Having seen the engine compartments of some cars at our Nano Meets without them on, I am glad I have mine on.

Mine is off since I replaced the lower arm. Must get it refitted soon as it really does keep the muck off the engine and gear box.

I've often wondered how many other makes fit under-trays? It's the first car I've ever owned that has had one.

I noticed a big difference in road dirt getting into the engine bay after having to drive without a tray for a few months, having fallen off on our track. Got a used one off fleabay and it will now stay on, with partial help from cable ties.

My year 2000 freelander had an undertray, although not as large as the Rover one. Car was scrapped in about 2014 but its undertray still sits in the garden!!
