Overdrive
In the 1960's I had a Sunbeam Rapier 3A with Overdrive on 4th gear. With the flick of a switch it kicked in, like cruise control really.
it was a pretty cool feature to have in those days. It had the name of Laycock de Normanville overdrive. Anyone remember them? I think some Rovers used them too. Here is a photo of mine, the unit is to the rear of the gearbox. Kev. Last edited by KLM; 20th May 2017 at 14:13.. |

The Standard Vanguard also used the same Laycock overdrive which worked on the 2nd and 3rd gear turning the 3 speed box into 5 speed.
Unlike cruise control the speed was still controlled by the driver and throttle. |

Hey that's nice that many of the guys on the forum remember the overdrive feature of the 50's and 60's.
Driving was a real pleasure back then, and finding somewhere to park.....well, you virtually parked where you needed to. Kev. |

Overdrive (on 3rd&4th gear) was fitted as standard on the Vauxhall VX4/90. Vauxhall's rival to the Mk. 3 Cortina. It certainly quietened the engine noise at 60-70 mph.

Also on my Humber Sceptre Mk 1 and my Sunbeam Alpine Mk 3. Always thought it was a Rootes thing but apparently not! Not exactly cruise control but next best thing. My alpine had a Holbay lump with twin Webers, most enjoyable.

Funny you should mention that, my Humber Sceptre (Hunter shape) also had overdrive. It was on the column iirc.
