Manual Gearbox Oil?
I have just become the new owner of a 75 2.5 saloon with only 31k on the clock. The previous owner has told me that the manual gearbox is filled with ATF fluid rather than MTF. This was done on the recommendation of an ex Rover main dealer mechanic because of a noisy reverse gear. This guy said the practice was common when this fault was reported on new cars.
Does anyone else have any infromation about this? The car drives well and the gear change is normal based on my experience of other 75's. |

It's the first time I've read about this idea on the forums and I've been around a long time. But reverse gear is almost always noisier than forward gears because of their straight cut teeth.

The Landrover guys have had a debate about ATF vs MTF - see here
https://forums.lr4x4.com/topic/53160-atf-or-mtf-94/ In my case I used the standard MTF 94 with some Slick 50 added. Don't know if the Slick 50 was a good idea or not but I had some in the garage and decided to give it a try - the gearshift is now excellent.

Some folk put a couple of pints of ATF in the engine oil to cure lifter problems.

Thanks for the responses - from the LR forum it seems that ATF will not cause any harm which gives me some comfort but will probably change it to MTF when I get the chance.
T-cut - The noisy reverse was (according to the ex Rover mechanic) a specific problem on just some of the Rovers at the time not a generic noise from the box in reverse. I also thought the Getrag box had synchro on reverse and would not have straight cut gears? |

MTF 94 for the 75/ZT box, and 10/40 as an emergency top up.
Dexron III is specified for the LT77 gearbox as used in Sherpa vans, and with modified versions fitted to Land Rovers without bothering to think about the later R380, which is also a MTF94 user like the PG1 gearbox. The long and short is simple, use MTF 94 in your Rover 75/ZT manual gearbox without additives and it will work perfectly Brian |

MG Rover confirms what you thought:
