1.8 - worth considering?
Hello all, hope everyone is well.
It's a while since I've had a 75 sadly, but I need to find another car at the moment, and have come across a nice looking 1.8 saloon. Previously all mine were v6's, and I don't want to start a "which is best" debate. The V6 is lovely, but the simplicity of the 4 cylinder for maintenance appeals. My main question to you experts is - can the 1.8 cope with some long motorway trips? I don't need to tailgate in the outside lane, I'm happy cruising along at 60ish, and I realise performance will be leasurely, which I don't mind. Never having driven a 1.8, any views on them? https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F323201909362 Last edited by lovema75; 12th April 2018 at 23:31.. |

The 1.8's are fine if properly maintained. The 1.8T has more gunt than the nasp but both are happy to cruise all day long at the speed you mention.I'm sure suzublu will be along later to give a more detailed opinion

Budget a little to do the head gasket (it may never need doing or could have already been done but be prepared for it) and it should be fine for your intended usage. Performance of a NASP engine should be adequate if not towing or dealing with big hills, provided you don't mind using the whole of the rev range.

Cruise at 90-ish if you want, the car won't mind. The law might but the car won't.

This all depends on how you drive. My first 1.8, in fact the first 75 I owned, I had for nine years. I found it great for me at all distances, very comfortable, and if demanded, very capable. I did have to have the head gasket done, but over a nine year period, no problem. My current 1.8 is a turbo, therefore it also has a capability that I rarely require. I have never towed a caravan, but I have had my vehicles loaded to the gunnels on many occasion with no adverse affect on it's performance. My normal cruising is " around the speed limit", nowhere near the cars limit.

With all this talk of cruising, sadly that is one thing no 1.8 ever left the factory with - cruise control.

I’ve had my 1.8T for 5 years. Lovely balanced car to drive, does not feel like 1.5 ton of metal being lugged around. Like everyone will say, maintenance is the key to a long life.
