Default Diesel Auto...is the mpg really that bad?

Right...
I'm homing in on a nice Zt auto to replace my lovely 75 connie derv.
There are plenty on here who cite very poor mpg compared with the manual.
Are they really that bad?
I'd expect about 5 mpg less than the manual....but some say its much worse.
Apologies to all who have posted about the same issue previously.

cant really advise but we had a pug 407 6 speed diesel auto and er indoors drove it exclusively for town use and she was averaging 23mpg. We have changed to a new Toyota aygo auto petrol and she gets around 45mpg from town driving.

ZT has 18 inch alloys so will probably be worse than a 75 with smaller wheels. Probably not by huge amounts...

I have a ZT auto diesel and have seen a true 45 MPG on a run and 34 MPG on mainly town driving. I don't drive for economy, but am not heavy footed. I feel I could get 50 MPG if I restrained speeds a little lower.

for what it's worth, I've previously had two derv 75s. My tourer auto would do low 30s around town and low 40s on a motorway. Compared to my manual derv, I was getting late 30s around town and late 40s on a motorway.

Nowadays I'm not really doing the mileage so fuel consumption isn't as important to me and if I were to get another I'd opt for the auto all day long as I personally believe the autobox suits the car better (just my opinion of course).

My diesel Tourer auto returned 47+mpg on the 142 mile round trip to POL, including a queue of over one hour to get in, and regularly does similar on long runs. However, short runs in winter when it doesn't get warm return about 35mpg however I drive it.

I would factor around a 25 percent drop in MPG. although the are different cars, my manual diesel passat gave around high 40s compared to the low to mid 30s I get with my zt auto. sitting in traffic on my commute, it is worth every penny of he additional fuel.

My tourer did about 36mpg before remap, after mafless remap via reidy remaps I've yet to drop below 42mpg tank to tank, with big runs and European driving seeing just shy of 50mpg tank to tank.

Depends of course on the type of journeys that you're doing!

Just bear in mind that the Official mpg figures for a ZT auto were;

28.3 Urban

54.7 Extra-Urban

and

40.9 Combined

From conversations that I've had with owners of both, I would expect the auto to return roughly 8 mpg less than a manual driven in the same manner!
