Ain't that the truth! Parts and servicing (where the routine work is done by an apprentice or beginner but the full hourly rate is still charged), and routine repairs for drivers who don't have the benefits of a club such as this!

The big suppliers maintain an extensive stock range of as many parts as you are ever likely to need -that's a vast holding which costs a fortune both to pay for and store - and costs have to be accounted for. But there are many items that do not necessarily have to be OEM to give peace of mind. You can get a good range of guaranteed Rover/MG parts easily enough if you look around, I have one I use regularly, and when you consider a lot of service parts might be renewed every year or two....? Just because a part is remanufactured by new companies doesn't necessarily mean it's poor quality. Good luck to the large main factors, I hope they prosper, but when they experience difficult trading times they, along with everyone else, will have to consider margins.

And that is why scrap yards thrive, because new parts are so expensive. The price you pay in no way reflects the manufactured price, most of the money goes to pay middlemen who merely handle the parts. I would imagine in some cases the mark-up is more than your local drug dealer gets. Suppliers know they can get away with it as YOU need the part if you want to be mobile.

Here we go again, slagging off Rimmers when it's not them who fix MG-Rover parts prices, infact they are one of the only dealers to offer discount to non motor traders?

To be fair it doesn't sound like Rimmers are coming out too badly! The OP was not comparing like for like and it's always easy to select the most expensive part you can find on a suppliers list and compare it with a second hand lump that nobody else wants.

I count the posts as two specifically against (including OP) and four in defence with the rest being general views. If that reflects real life, Rimmers won't lose any sleep. Their reputation for service will take care of it. And of course you cannot in any way compare the price of scrap yard parts with brand new.

Margins in car parts are just as relevant as they are in petrol retailing, or milk production. Manufacturers, suppliers, retailers, transport: all the links in the chain in our wonderful system, not forgetting HMRC, play their part.

I don't Ed; we're of like mind on this. Some of the worst products I have owned have been German.

I bought one and it was nothing like the quality of the OEM type. German product yes but of less quality.
I'd say that my £15 German Mahle filter is satisfactory for its task. It's not noticeably poorer quality than the MGR version, although its construction is slightly different. But of one thing I am sure; the genuine part is not worth an additional £45 for what is basically a plastic frame containing treated fabric.

Wonder if the part in question was specced by rover in the BMW days.
We all Know how much BMW charge for servicing. I know they have tried to change this recently, but back in 2000 it made your eyes pop out.
