Can I just ask everyone to pause and just think for a minute?
Rover 2003 is a child (sorry, I have tried to avoid posting, for I will sound patronising or condescending, but you are just 14). And for those who have been convinced that he was some kind of troll or catfish, this seemingly has been disproved! Think back to when you were 14, did you not have a million desires, dreams and wishes. When I was 14, I had a 'garage' of my dream cars, with dreams of what I was going to do with them. There would be at least two mk1 Escorts, one a Mexico, and another a V8 modified one (I saw a mk2 with a V8 when I was about 13, and I fell in love with the sound), another car was to be a mk2 Granada 2.8i just left standard. This was at a time when prices were all less than £1000 and no thought was given to ins, tax, fuel. You know the real things that happen when you become an adult? By all accounts, this kid has some of the cars he dreams of, and who are we to intimate he is lying? Likewise when I was 14, my mind went from one fad or idea about 'my' cars to another in the time it took me to walk downstairs! What frustrated me the most was my family never saw my dreams, or shot them down with the thoughts of reality. My friends were more interested in football or music, and with no internet, or no clubs that could cater for my interests, they remained silent, unfulfilled, undiscussed dreams and fantasy. I can remember too, as a child, worshipping my father and grandfather (who did encourage me -teaching me to drive his car at 15, and changing its oil), wanting the things they wanted. Doing the things they did, which could explain why he dreams of certain cars, not normally associated with 14 year olds. At 14, I never thought before I spoke in real life, never mind when posting a letter (remember no internet back then lol!), so why think a 14 year old now will hold back? These are life lessons we all learn, some learn harder than others, and remain silent ultimately learning nothing! I asked thousands of seemingly stupid questions, and made endless silly remarks. I hope I can say I learned from them, but the best thing I was ever taught, by a very wise teacher, 'the only stupid question, is the one that isnt asked' Perhaps this thinking before posting could be encouraged for some responses too? Or simply scrolling past? Which reminds me of something else I was told when I was around 14, 'if you cant say something nice, say nothing at all'. I do have to wonder how he would be spoken to at a meet. I would have thought he would have been welcomed, encouraged and shown around, you know, treated like a young enthusiast?

Well said Alan, post #21. Couldn’t agree more and I hope young Rover 2003 gets the encouragement he deserves

This lad has had some stick on the forum from some members for whatever reason..however, I recall one member meeting the lad at Castle Howard and confirming him to be an enthusiast. Think it was madeupname from Sheffield who, after seeing the debacle in another thread, literally did get his coat and go home.
So Rover 2003 there had been members prepared to defend your position, take from this the fact that there are a multitude of friendly helpful folk on this forum, look, listen and learn and stick around. |

This has to be one of the best posts that I have had the grace to read on this forum Recently I vowed not to contribute here any longer and one of the reasons was the way Thomas was being treated. For a short period I was a bit sceptical of him and others that thought he was a banned member or a troll did make me think. Then it was confirmed he was at a gathering and was genuine but still the snide remarks continued from the gentlemen of this club to my total disgust. At this point along with other derogatory threads I decided to leave. Reading though this thread and especially the above has made me realise that some and hopefully more will remember that once upon a time they too were children. They may have had dreams and aspirations that they may or may not have come to fruition as adults. As adults many people forget about childhood, perhaps it was rubbish, perhaps they have just turned into cynical old farts that dislike a kid playing with a ball or fiddling with an old car or an old radio, I'd say to those to get a life and behave. What's wrong now is we dont allow kids to do something out of the box, we moan when they sit on an I-pad or Xbox but if they do things like I did when a young teenager like messing around with a car or an old telly these adults of today just frown on it. Give the boy some slack, give him encouragement and support, there are just not enough kids these days that are prepared to do this so please think back to your dreams as a young teenager and what you missed out on. I did due to having a religious and controlling mother, yes I did have my hobbies but they were seriously curtailed by her controlling.

At 14 is was mad about my motorbikes and scooters. At 11 I could strip and re build Villiers 2 strokes, then when I was 14 was given a Triumph Tigress 250 twin with a seized up engine. Took me months to free up engine with penetrating oil and paperboy job to get the money together to fix it. Give the lad some slack, he is learning.

I have read this thread with interest, totally agree with posts #21 and #27
Being one of the lucky ones I had an encouraging childhood, both parents being very practical and capable. My dear old Pops was an Aircraft Engineer, ending his career writing manuals for others to follow, Haynes for planes as we liked to call it. Like has been mentioned we all had dreams and ideas, some we were destined never to fulfil but with encouragement perhaps we could. I was lucky to be able to go to Earls Court Motor shows. Anyone remember the Lotus Europa? Aged about 11/12 I was at a local Auction House, I spotted a sit on petrol lawn mower, my imagination took over and I stuck my hand up and joined in the bidding. Had to get my Pops to collect the machine, he asked what are you gonna do with this, I told him I fancied making a go cart. Far enough he said, you can use the garage and all the tools, makes sure they all go back on their shadow boards etc and clear the garage in the evening so we can park the car. He didn't join in but did help verbally, leaving me to get on with it. This took me into another world, I eventually raced proper go carts, later years venturing into formula 3 and rallying for a while. Along with tackling various projects, car maintenance etc. I wonder if any of that would have happened, if I grew up in a world where the x-box, TV and smart phones were all most kids are into, not even going outside, instead surrounded in cotton wool and a sterile environment.

Maybe we need a dreams and aspirations section or Junior members area to accommodate and encourage younger enthusiasts.
