That's been an expensive tapping noise not to get fixed.
As to the clutch pipework transmitting the noise, if you're totally sure that's the source, I'd suggest it's most likely to be the slave cylinder that's no longer running freely on the gearbox input shaft. The slave cylinder floats loosely on the shaft, which rotates at engine speed. Anything tapping on the slave will get transmitted up the hydraulic pipework, where you have identified it. Whatever mechanism is generating the tapping, it's going to require internal inspection by removing the gearbox and quite a task for the inexperienced DIY mechaic. However, if you do want to follow through yourself, there are HowTos available on the forum. TC |

If it's the same as the diesel, then the thrust bearing/concentric slave cylinder combo slides along a guide tube surrounding the input shaft, and fixed to the back of the bell housing. A knackered bearing/slave can put grooves on this tube, which can give unpredictable clutch action, unless polished out or replaced when the slave is replaced. A little silicon spray applied to this tube and lightly wiped off also helps with light, smooth action.
