Just noticed on rimmers that one of the sprockets, the one positioned closer to the middle of the engine costs about 13 quid and the other one about 200 Hope I wont have to replace the 200 one I really hope that you're right and that the aux belt or other parts on that side of the engine are worn as I'm going to replace the timing kit anyways and that should sort everything out hopefully.

Also checked on rimmers and couldn't find any diagram for the ancillary belt and also no tensioner or idler for it, only found a diagram that shows the alternator and the belt for the 2.0 diesel

In that case all your questions about the rear sprocket wheels will be answered as you'll be removing them anyway.

Regarding the rear camshaft belt, I'd like to replace it myself, is there any way to do it without any special tools? And also, does it work by only marking the sprockets so you know how to refit them back the way they were or does one have to really lock the crankshaft?

Regarding your question, it's not the sprockets that would have to be marked, it's the exhaust camshaft because it will move when the rear belt assembly is withdrawn. If you haven't locked the inlet camshaft, that will also move giving you a bigger problem. The engine will then be completely mistimed. Simon

Thank you Simon, although, I have spoken yesterday to a friend of mine who has done this job 2 years afo at a mechanic's garage that doesn't have the special tools required, and as it seems they managed to do it properly, he has got the same belts for 70k miles now and everything is running properly Now I am not at all arguing and putting your knowledge under the question mark Simon, I also know that this is the way to do it 100% as you should and I am only thanking you for all the info you provided, I am just wondering how they managed to do it without the tools, I also asked him this and he said that they told him then that the tools are not a must-have, although he didn't further ask how they exactly did it.

That's the key question which I have asked a few times. Some people then remember that they did actually fabricate something for some of the tasks, others don't reveal their secret.

I have succesfully changed timing belts on various engines by making my own alignment marks on sprockets and casings or other suitable adjacent engine parts with Tippex or a paint chip touch-up brush before removing the old belt(s). Just make sure the surfaces are clean, and that the paint will stick!
