Am I being April Fooled - in June - or...?
So I parked behind this Vauxhall estate at B&Q yesterday, and was amazed to see, when the guy opened his tailgate, to see a 2nd set of rear light clusters inside the boot
I'm going to embarrass myself here by failing to see whatever it is that's blindingly obvious, and hypothesise that I wasn't in fact hallucinating because of COVID or something, and Vauxhall do in fact provide their estate cars with lights you can use when driving home from B&Q with an overstuffed boot, and can't get the tailgate down

They are fitted to some Audi’s too. If it’s dark and your putting stuff in the boot the internal lights are lit for safety

Its a legal requirement for the rear lights to be visible with the boot/tailgate open , if not a second set have to be fitted. . Land Rover fell foul of this when the Land Rover Discovery One spare wheel covered one rear light with the tail door open . They put a light on the door edge, but that wasn't deemed too be sufficient , so eventually another set was put in the bumper .

You have always been able to drive our R40 Tourers with the tail gate up and the rear lights showing

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I wonder why they designed the car like that? It is not as though it creates more space for the opening. I can only think it is easier to press the side panels without the closing curve at the rear. It makes the tailgate heavier, therefore heavier duty struts, plus the additional rear lights, ie extra costs, plus if they could do the closing curve, it would make the rear panel more substantial and vibrate less?

Search me mate. I think a lot of the time the car manufacturers are just desperately trying to find something that'll look clever...

The reason for the second set of lights inside is so when the tailgate is open the lights are still visible ( A Legal Requirement ).
LandRover have theirs in the bumper. I have always felt that it is needless as someone is nearly standing in front of the light cluster anyway. Alan Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
