ABS issues, close to weighing the thing in!
I have had issues with my ABS for close to a month now
It all started when I changed the ABS sensor that was damaged in the accident I had which ripped out the wheel arch liner I had initially repaired the wires by just reattaching them this worked well but the sensor was becoming erratic. So I got a new one, about three weeks ago I fitted it and really wish I had not bothered I had to dig out the remains of it and would appear to have damaged the magnetic ring in the process, The ABS was a bit too keen to cut in, and the speedo behaved as though it had a worn cable, after 10 miles or so the speedo died, it has not worked since. Today I changed the whole hub, looking at the old one its plain to see the magnetic ring is no longer there when comparing it with the new one. Put it all back together and it is no better than before

Been out today, looked at it, I have 0.2 v, although I did not rotate the wheel. I have however checked the wiring does still lead to the relavent plug on the ABS ECU and both the wires check out as fine.
Ive sent Phil-T4 a PM but no reply as of yet If the ABS module is dead thats the end of the car for me

it will either be the ecu (about £25 from scrappie) or abs sensor about same ish, the guy who posted the picture of the multimeter was spot on with the test spin the wheel and see how you go, also unplug the lead going to the sensor and vehicle side check to see you have dc voltage actually getting to the top of the lead if you don't then the abs ecu is definitely faulty, would guess about 6v ish should be present, you can also substitute an abs sensor by putting a resistor across both terminals and if your light goes out then you know its the sensor, not the ecu. Dont' bin the sensor lead if you do end up changing it, cut about 6" back from the connector plug, bare both wires and solder the resistor across the wires "an instant tester for the future"!!!
Value of resistor you need is 1.50K 1% tolerance and avaialable from Maplins for about 50p tops!! Good luck Mark |

Unfortunately being fitted with traction control means it can't be fitted with any ABS module if it has failed it would need a traction control one. And I can't park it up, it's my only transport. Only voltages present at the plug are 0v and 0.2v but I believe you will only find 12v if the sensor is good otherwise it shuts down

Silly question maybe but are you sure the hub you fitted is ok ?
I've had the magnetic ring on the wheel bearing fail even when visually, all appears to be fine. I've also had a few occasions where customers have purchased the cheap sensors off of ebay & they have failed after a short time. Would it not be worth your while to jack the front up & do as FrenchMike has suggested with a multimeter ? As already said, it would be a shame to give up now. |
