When I set the shutter to the correct exposure as per the light meter, I end up with a bright shining light. I find I have to under expose the image to get any kind of detail. What am I doing wrong?

Make sure your camera is set to spot metering, not evaluative metering, or the camera will attempt to take a reading of the whole scene and see all the blackness and attempt to expose for that rather than the moon

Jeff has covered this very well. My camera is a bit different as I can see the the image as it will be when captured at all times through the viewfinder. So I just zoom in with the viewfinder (not something you can do on a DSLR) and adjust the settings until it looks right. I also have a histogram displayed in the viewfinder. I can of course use spot metering as per normal if I wish. |

The Moon by Philip Davies, on Flickr
I've been trying to catch a moon shot for the last couple of days.... This is with my 200mm Tamron zoom lens. Thank you so much for explaining spot metering! I really want a more powerful zoom!!

What equipment am I using?
Nothing special really, it's a Panasonic Lumix FZ82, got a good zoom, I think if I play around with the settings I'm sure I can get a better picture. I only used it properly for the first time last weekend at the London classic car show and most of the pictures came out ok, had a little play with different settings there. |
