Default Laptop memory

OK, had enough of Gill telling me that her laptop is slooooow, so going to get new memory

Have identified which sort, but question is, how much to buy. Currently has 1gb (running Vista) and the logical answer is 4gb (2gb in each bank) BUT would it work if I got one 2gb and used the original 1gb alongside it? (mismatch I know but thinking of the pennies?)

Also Crucial seem cheapest but any other vendor suggestions welcome!

Dave, most probably 1 + 2 GB RAM will work, but it's not guaranteed. Secondly it's not best for the performance. So I would prefer 2 identical 2 GB types. Kingstons aren't bad IMHO.

If you upgrade her memory she will just remember more stuff

1x 1GB = Single Channel,
2x 1GB = Dual Channel,
1x 1GB, 1x 2GB = Single Channel,
2x 2GB = Dual Channel.

3GB would work well, although not ideal - dual channel doubles memory access speeds, however for 1GB the size rather than bandwidth will be the limiting factor.

Whats the CPU? Pointless putting 4GB in if it's got a slow CPU...

3GB by 1x1GB and 1x2GB is what i'm being "forced" to run atm on my netbook as the 1GB is soldered and while it's not ideal obviously it is still much much faster than just the single 1GB stick.

And there wont be any sort of compatibility issues as long as you buy the right stuff.

Thanks for the replies

I've gone with a single 2gb to augment the existing 1gb, as the Crucial site says the OS will probably only use 3gb anyway - even if the 2gb only really works on it's own, it's still double what we have now

Not sure about the CPU, but probably a bit pants if truth be told....

A 32 bit operating system can address up to 4 GB of RAM, but some of that is reserved. So a bit less than 3.5 GB will be used. The exact value depends on the PC hardware though. Therefore it does makes sense to fit 2 x 2 GB, regarding speed and compatibility.

Oh well Gone for it now, as needed to get it quickly. Thought it might make sense to at least try it, as £38 for one at 2gb, whereas 4gb would (obviously) have been double. If it's not too hot, p&p is free from Crucial so will save the pennies for another lot!

(btw processor on Gill's laptop is better than mine on here, and this machine goes well with 2gb of RAM)

Well, Dave, it won't be that bad. It's just not the very best performance wise. Although the computer will work much smoother than with just 1 GB of RAM.

Worst case is an incombatibility, so the notebook won't even start up with both memory chips inserted. Just take the 1 GB module out and use 2 GB instead. Even then it will definitely be faster than before.
