I had similar a month ago, turned out to be inlet manifold gasket. Was coming out as quick as I was pouring it in!

Sounds like inlet manifold gasket to me,a couple of quid to replace,& an easy job.Replace it & that rules out one source.I don't mind driving down sometime & showing you various things,like plemum cleaning & obd for the engine temp.

Having just pulled the spark plugs out they are all covered in oil, except the 3rd one along which is covered in sludgy oil. What does this suggest?

Still could be Inlet Manifold?

Not sure, sludgy oil is never good, I had my cam cover gasket replaced a few months ago after finding oil in the spark plugs. Sure someone will be along with better info
