Unhappy auto box

Hi all
found this in my gearbox, but what happen to cause this?

No the car has just 66K on it and ive done 35K just one owner before me all old MOTs service history E.T.C

Maybe a flaw in the original casting that eventually caused a small piece to break off completely.

I once had a similar mess in an auto-box at less than 20,000 miles, when the output shaft bearing disintegrated and bits made their way inside. It made some interesting noises as the metal was mashed!

If this is the only damaged part then James is probably right. Otherwise look for the bit that did break and got mangled up in this one. Either way I would suggest that a complete re-build or a replacement box is on the cards.
