That's an absolute nightmare. The implications are to awful even to try to guess. I'm surprised at the driver's rapid presence of mind. Many would have abandoned the car, or at least tried to, providing the doors would open whilst in motion. I think I might have looked for a convenient brick wall...

Just imagine if it was 60mph, electric cars are not safe, they should have a battery shut off switch somewhere surely.
MG have got to find what cause it and maybe do a call back on all the models ?

Sorry to be ignorant, but do you loose all control if an electric car is 'turned off'?
I get that even my old diesel 75 would be a handful without power assisted steering and assisted braking, but some control is better than none isn't it? |

Hi Ben. Never thought of that like you i thought you would have some sort of control albeit limited to steering and braking

I've had brake failure many years ago, only gear you normally cannot select at anything over walking speed is first but you can slow fairly quickly with 2nd. The incident shows, with all electric you have no back up. macafee2 |

Glad nobody was hurt. This is a worrying case, which needs to be investigated fully and all results published.
Just a thought, had a member of the public been injured or worse, who would be liable, car owner or manufacturer?. |

Related to the "no back up" aspect, a tradesman called around the other day and I noted he'd got a hire van. He said his new electric van has been a nightmare only 4 weeks into ownership. Totally failed on Day 3 while driving normally and just stopped. He couldn't move it, and of course no back up battery to even work the hazard lights or to get him to a safe place! It was getting dark...eventually taken away by truck to main dealer.
Got it back a week later and tests had revealed nothing obvious, but charged up and as it was working OK, given back to him. 4 days later same thing happened just as he was joining a dual carriageway. Took for ages to get his message to the recovery people as vehicles going past just kept blasting their horns....as no hazards. He says he never wants to see it again as the possibility of someone hitting his dead van at night with no lights and causing injury or worse doesn't bear thinking about. The funny aspect to all this is that some main dealers are getting very cheap van hire deals from hire companies due to the volume of business they are providing! |
