Incredible number of vehicles involved. My experience on the autobahns is you drive faster to keep the flow of traffic but even at 100 MPH there is a Merc or BMW plowing down on you at a rapid speed from behind.
30 years of driving and I'm quite happy to stay on the inside lane now motoring at 70 MPH, generally stress free & no camera worries. Arriving in style, comfort & no backache

I could not agree more at least at reasonable speed we stand a better chance of getting where we are going. Trouble is there are always idiots about especially those that want a slip road and are in the outside lane 200 yards before it!

I have more problems with people entering from slip roads. It sees most are incapable of adjusting their speed to enter the motorway safely.

259? Scary!
One possible reason may be: The driver of the first car slowed down to adjust the speed to fit the current visibility. Quite reasonable, but yet a mistake as far too many drivers are not able to keep a save distance. Driving in heavy fog or similar conditions on an Autobahn or motorway is very dangerous. Going fast and you may hit the car in front of you, going slow and you may hit by the car behind you. So what to do if there is no exit road nearby? ... and far too often they think they have the right of way.

The A2 near Hannover is notorious. Several bits have speed restrictions, or at least variable ones that can be apllied or removed.
The bit between Hanover and Braunschweig (Brunswick) is always very busy, and nasty when wet. I'm fairly certain the part in question has a permanent 120k limit with reductions in certain places when wet. Not that many people take any notice! I've been caught in many tailbacks and almost missed flights a number of times. I try to avoid it and use the B roads which may be slower but are more reliable. Incidentally, if anyone wonders where the pied piper of hamelyn is based: Hameln, just by Peine. I was on that very stretch of road just under a week ago on my way to Wolfsburg. Was light traffic by 21:00 so was able quite safely to do 180KMH in places, but always stuck to the 120 limits where applied. I was surprised quite how well a 1.4 with a turbo actually went! |

That's not really a 259 car pile up........it's lots of smaller ones on the same stretch of road.
