That is correct on the early years when certain cars had DPFs. The BMW M47 diesel engine (sounds familiar?) had an option of of a DPF. The old M47 engine that didnt have one was identified by having a downward pipe like all diesels to stop the rear of the car being covered in soot. The larger diesel engines from 2004/5 had a DPF such as the 325d and 330d. In 2008 the N47 was introduced to replace the old M47 engine and that had a DPF as standard. The problem with the N47 engine was timing chain rattle at approx 100k which meant an engine out job as the chain was at the rear.

And most likely the best car ever built, in my humble opinion.

Forgot to add the N47 was 184 bhp as stock and superb on fuel and the M47 BMW engine was 163 std. German cars tend to be over complicated over time constantly looking to improve all the time some times for the worse.
