I have just fitted mine but I am not sure that they have the stat the right way around. The 'spring end' is facing the inlet shouldn't the 'bulb' end be on the inlet (so the flow of coolant is in the direction that the thermostat opens) . Looking at the photos from Mintee and wuzerk theirs is the other way around???

Default Housing

Mine arrived today (a present for someone), nicely made. i took it apart to measure the opening in the thermostat and it is 28mm which is the same as the Chevy 'stat which has given no problems over the last couple of months so the flow should be fine. However, i found that the centre spindle on the stat was NOT in the centre so that there was a large gap in the 'closed' valve i.e. it was not fully closed. I had to move the spindle to the middle and then pinch the sides together to keep it there. I hope that it was a one off.

T_I_M that is correct, the spring end should be facing the engine. that is also the wax cylinder end and the hot water needs to hit that first otherwise the system would probably overheat before the stat opened.

Phew thanks wuzerk - I must try to be less of a drama queen! A quick search on the internet would have told me that.

I’ve just tried mine, didn’t appear to be any quicker warming up but it reached 87deg on a short stretch of main road. So a definite improvement as max I have seen before even over the summer was 84deg. The outlet was hot when I touched it with 80deg showing so I assume this is simply due to coolant going through the 2mm hole.

What I do is simple -
  • Press and hold the trip reset,
  • Turn ignition to first position, the display will read 'test 1'
  • Then press the trip reset repeatedly until it reads 'test 19'
  • The display with then alternate with 'Log 1 -on" / "Log 1 -off'
  • When it shows 'Log 1 -off' press the trip to get to test 7 which will show the water temperature as the 2 figures next to it.
  • Start the engine and watch the numbers climb.
You will need to do this every time you start the engine as when you switch off and it returns to regular display. It is easy to make a mistake and reset your trip meter when you don't want to - so make a note of the reading before you start if that matters to you!

I think mine is slightly quicker to warm up - but this is affected by the ambient temperature as well as cabin heater use.

I suspect it is because aluminium is a good conductor and the hot water one side of the closed 'stat warms it up.
