So, tried out my K+DCAN INPA compatible cable advertised as configured for BMW cars and I could get TOAF (version 0.5.00.43) to connect to and scan the car but it wasn't working correctly. I only got SRS, JATCO and another unidentified module coming up on the output and I could only click on those modules for more info. Something similar to KOFFEE's experience. So, I soldered pins 7 and 8 together and glory hallelujah, it worked! All modules now accessible. As I'm running TOAF on a Mac and managed to manually configure the COM port so it sees the cable, I consider this something of an achievement!! Now I wonder which module checks the VIZ motors?

There are loads of cables on eBay, all with the same descriptions, but the simple truth seems to be that there are differences between them, and the black one I bought first kind of half worked, just as you've described, but would go no further; the blue one I replaced it with worked perfectly first time.

PS you have bridged 7 & 8 haven't you?


{update} OK forum won't let me post any more pics. However, the black (no good) cable was described thus:

-so all sounded fine. But it was no good... may just have been faulty of course. All I can say for certain is that, for me, the black one didn't work, and the blue one did!

"on a Mac" ? Are you using Parallels or Boot Camp, or something else?

The VIS motors are under the engine module. You won't get anything up on the computer, and as it's a Mac I can call it a computer, so it's important to open the bonnet and listen for four sweeps of each motor. You might have to press the start button - a bit like when checking the fan (also under engine) but in that case you have to move the slider bar to approx. midway.

He's running a virtual Windows session (probably called something else in macLand), which is something that allows a Mac to emulate a proper computer. Respect

Guessed as much, thanks, but just wondering which one as once we sink into the mire that is Windows we, as unsuspecting Mac users, then get exposed to all manner of threats and horrors as if running Windows alone isn’t enough

I use Crossover which permits many Windows applications to run without issue. TOAF was an easy install, just the cable configuration needed doing, for which I followed this guide. Still needed to short pins 7 and 8 on the cable; otherwise straightforward. Crossover's also allowed me to run the occasional software that's Windows only on the Mac without having to install or run the dreaded Windows itself. Also avoids the additional load incurred when virtualising the OS using VMWare / VirtualBox etc. Even Apple's decision to move to their own silicon will not make Crossover redundant as Big Sur includes Intel translation software.

Oh, and thanks for the tips about testing the motors!

Thanks for the tip, will probably give Crossover a try as I have a spare MacBook Air with a good battery but first I'll need to get a USB cable as I've been using an old RS232 serial cable. I had a USB one but it wasn't 100% reliable unlike the serial cable so gave it to a local member to enable his TOAF.

And as I suspected, one of my Viz motors is faulty (short to ground, sporadic error). Only got these 18 months or so ago and I've not done many miles since then; they don't last long before failing in my experience. Must be loads of KV6 owners wondering why their cars are so sluggish and unaware that it's due to dead Viz motors. Awaiting modified replacements from Stocktake that should last and when I get them, I'll check the flaps aren't sticking and putting stress on the motor.

Just as well to order from Dave (Stocktake) I've had more of his motors through my hands supplying local Swedish owners than I can remember. And on the very few occasions there has been a problem he always sorts the problem FoC. I'm aware that you can get a set of original motors perhaps cheaper but none contain the modifications that Dave has fitted eg oil seal and I believe his motors, as you have experienced, are cheaper in the long run.

How's the fan?
