I prefer an 8mm socket key, used with a long extension bar, you can then undo it via the wheel arch, far easier!

At the time we had to re-fill the lads gearbox because of changing the inner seal which had started to leak, therefore we had the driveshaft out as well so we used the bottle pump with the hook and pumped the oil into the box, we had the car on ramps & axle stands to keep the car level for the re-fill.
Yes, this works with the battery box fitted Steve, it just wasn't fitted in this picture as the clutch hydraulic fittings were yet to be connected.

I have 3/8 drive hex keys, a set of the axle plug keys, and actual Allen keys, to be fair if you are using reasonable Allen keys, and I was using genuine Allen keys, then they are not a problem, however it's whatever you prefer.

The ONLY way to refill properly IMO is to use the funnel and hosepipe method.

Can't get much easier.

Gonna save it until the weekend, when weather should be warmer! Plus I'll warm the oil if needed to make it runnier. I might need an extension on my 12" bar to get enough torque to crack those plugs. Any tips for getting them loose, - blowtorch, soak with release fluid, hit with hammer and drift?

They're not that tight. A normal 3/8 socket wrench will generate plenty of leverage to get them out. Fill plug first, drain plug second.

The plugs are only tightened to 35Nm, and I undid mine with an 8mm Allen key

These are not high torque items Andrew, and I've never had any issues removing them ever, the usual tighten first then slacken has always been the order of the day.

What causes issues are using the wrong sized tools, and putting the mark of the devil on the hexagons.

If you fancy, take a run east at the weekend, and we can do it while the gear oil is piping hot

Thanks for the offer, Brian. Hopefully, using the right tool this time will sort it.
