Cable tie: thanks for the parts and advice, much appreciated as usual.
I'm supposed to be away working for three days today and late last night when getting tools out of the garage I noticed the warning light flashing on my freezer. temperature up to -6 Checked this morning now -5. I've got a full freezer to deal with now! |

and so it goes on....
As we were all about to leave the house this morning for work and school, my wife asked me to look at a back tyre on the Zafira, she thought it was going down a bit.
Well it was totally flat, rim on the floor, screw poking out of it. I had to take my daughter to school and then go home and sort it out, and fit the spare, then toddle off to work myself. Fortunately not too busy today. Got a day off tomorrow and was hoping to finish the 75 front suspension, so will have get a tyre now too. Fortunately the tyres only have a few months life left in them so it's not worth repairing it. Just another expense Added to the broken freezer the tumble dryer started making a horrible grinding noise last week, and is currently out of action. It needs to be investigated when I've time. Luckily we've got some lovely weather down here this week so it's not needed. |

Fortunately cable tie had sold me two complete struts; springs, dampers, hubs including calipers and brakes. I was initially intending to just swap the lot over, but decided to keep my hub as the brake disc shields were in better condition.
Because I couldn't get my N/S hub off the wishbone i left it on and split the damper from the hub and changed the spring. I also used the donor parts from the top of the damper as my bearing especially was in a bad way, and built a good strut out of the two. I was going to do the same on the O/S but the upper pinch bolt sheared! # After much plusgas, hammering and levering I finally got the wishbone out, it's a pity my new ball joint splitter didn't fit as it worked a treat on the track rod ends Once the strut was off, I cut the bolt either side of the pinch plate and hammered it out. I thought about drilling it, but quickly decided i didn't have time to messing with that and rebuilt the strut using the donor hub. I cleaned the shield and gave it a couple coats of paint. Will put my brakes back on the new hub. I just about got the spring back on last night when the light went. Will try later to fit the strut weather permitting. |

Next on the list to do....
Yesterday morning I got the offside wheel arch liner back fitted the mud flap, sorted the ABS sensor plug, put it all together and got the wheel on.
Started on the service items, crankcase & air filter, didn't have time for an oil change so that's next. Took it out for a run and all seemed ok. Later when I cut the grass at my cricket club by towing the broken gang mower, I was getting all sorts of clunking noises from the steering. it only seemed noticeable at low speeds and I didn't feel on the roads before. I took the wheel off to see if I had missed a bolt or done something silly.... ..and I discovered a lot of play in the o/s track rod end ball joint So now I'm off to find a replacement, just when I thought I'd nearly finished. Any recommendations for brands to use? |

And I thought I had problems! I only need to replace the clutch, rear suspension bushes and starter motor... at the moment..! P'raps I'll just buy an old Clio as a daily, and make the CDT into a project. Another project.

Not being funny here, but why the hell do folks mess about by trying to remove the leg from the hub carrier. The problems this potentially cause are inconceivable.
Knowing that this pinch bolt is notorious for being either stubborn or capable of snapping off as shown, why not drop off the drop link from the anti-roll bar, drop off the caliper complete, bottom ball joint pinch bolt out and hub nut off and finally the track rod end. That way you can remove the abs connector and 3 nuts from the upper suspension turret. All off in 1 piece and nothing damaged ? Talk about making extra work ! Believe me, it's so easy to do, I do them at the roadside / car parks etc this way and find it so easy to do without breaking anything at all. 1/2 hour max for each operation, the spring takes 10 mins to change with the leg off.
