Driveshaft intermediate bearing...
Do these ever fail?
I've got a road-speed rumble going on, and it's not wheel bearings! The visible end of the bearing does look a bit dark & greasy, but there's no discernible play when rocking the driveshaft (I've yet to take it off and spin it). |

Yes they can and do fail - rare though.
As well as wheel bearings, tyres can also cause rumbling - worth swapping the spare round the four corners just to rule them out. |

Interesting - I have been suffering from growly bearing noise and suspected wheel bearings, but confused by lack of play in the front bearings , grasping the lifted wheel top and bottom.

Well the road-speed rumble is now being drowned out by the engine-speed vibration which only appeared when I replaced the split hydramount...

PM Mickyboy on here - I'm sure he can send you a good one, and far cheaper than buying new.

Intermediate driveshaft bearing.
Had this problem last year on my 04 Diesel Conn SE Auto got a used one on ebay though it turned out to be from a manual gearbox so shafts were different length. Gave all to local small garage he removed the bearing from ebay shaft without much trouble as he had circlip pliers with correct right angle ends. The bearing on my Rover drive shaft however was totally gone resulting in leaving the outer shell of faulty bearing solidy stuck in the shaft housing he removed this by a useful trick of running a line of electric weld inside the shell, when the weld cools it 'pulls' the shell inwards enough to give clearance to allow it to drop out.
Hope this makes sense if you need more clarification I can contact the garage to obtain more detailed information. BTW there is a maker and product number on the bearing which I did take a note of at the time (sorry had a look, couldn't find where I noted it down) surely someone on this forum knows the details!, if you could source it new it would save buying a complete driveshaft and having to remove, which is after all a used item, the bearing. |
