Default Car values

I had my Insignia in to the dealets today for new brake pads, while it was there, the sales team rang and asked if I would like a valuation on the car. Told them I wasnt interested in trading up, but do the valuation anyway. When I collected the car tonight , I spoke to the sales rep, we have only had the car 18 months and done 11000 miles, valuation was £5k less than purchase price. I expected to lose maybe 3k, but not 5.Will be keeping the csr anyway as we really like it. Plus the fact still got 3 &1/2 years finance to pay on it.

The difference between the £5K depreciation, and your expected £3K, is the profit they would hope to make on your car, if you had been mug enough to accept their "valuation" and traded in your car. Any nearly new car will depreciate quickly, but you need to hang onto it as long as it's not high maintenance to get the value out of it. I suspect from reports from several Insignia owners I know, that these cars are unappreciated by the general car- buying public, but are a little-known gem in terms of owner satisfaction for reliable and comfortable motoring. As I tend not to pay more than £1k for a car, I suspect it will be a few years yet before I can afford a well maintained, old one! PS for those who know me, my wife paid for her SLK.

There is an element of snobbery and status with cars. Dealers trade on this. Buy a car and it’s the best car they have on the forecourt. 3 years later the value has plummeted. Sorry it’s the less desirable spec, it only has 3 doors, it will be harder for us to sell on. The list is endless but the list did not exist when you bought it. Funny that.
Let the mugs pay depreciation. Did it once myself with a new car but never again.
Talking of hidden gems. Mazda 6.

There is. Mine is related to how long I can keep a car in good, roadworthy condition and running like new whilst being very old!

Personally, I am happy to be a snob and elitist for this reason.

No, that is all I can afford to spend on ME, she spends a lot more on her. I don't know where you get all your money, MSS, but I have to live on what I earn. And if I have different priorities for my meagre income, it doesn't give you the right to call me mean or tight. Do you really think I would choose to spend my spare time keeping old cars going on a shoestring, if I could afford something more reliable? Get real, and see how the other half lives!
