Default Engine light

Hi, I unplugged my maf sensor earlier to test it, and obviously the engine management light came on the dash. I plugged it back in as it seemed to run worse with it unplugged, so I guess it's working as it should. But now the light is still on the dash and it says check engine when I start up the car. Have I done something wrong or will it sort itself out?
Cheers
Dan

I've just (an hour ago) swapped my dead, unplugged MAF for another dead one, then back again with a test drive in between and no warnings came up on the dash.

Thought I'd take a punt on one from a scrapyard for a tenner, it was just as dead as my original

Recently unplugged my MAF and got no warning lights, just a slight increase in power and a slight decrease inMPG so plugged it back in again!

Doesn't it mean though when it runs better without that the maf is faulty? I'm sure I've read on here aswell about the light coming on when it's unplugged as it notices something missing?

I've been running months with mine unplugged, like I say, I've never seen an engine warning light.
Maybe I should check the bulb
