Default Essential spares

As time goes by and part become scarce, what parts would you say are recommended to keep as spares.
Alternator & Starter for a start, any thing else

Trouble is everything is essential after it starts going wrong.

But I doubt any motor factor type manufactured parts will be completely unavailable inside the next 10 or more years either. Rusting body shells and crash damage will do most of the cars in by then anyway.

Where have all the Sierras gone?

I dont think that essential spares will become scarce for a while yet although the non essentials are already scarce/non existant eg powerfolds and switches.

However I have had for some years a policy of buying a spare or spares of any part which could possible go wrong on my two (after a search through this forum and others to see what the common complaints are) AS LONG AS THE PRICE ASKED WAS LESS THAN 25% OF LIST.

My theory being that if anything does go wrong I have the part and it cost a lot less than list giving cheaper running costs. Or If nothing goes wrong I can at least probably sell the parts to another owner for what I paid when I eventually give up Rover ownership.

So, to answer baconbuttyman, what have you accumulated?

As I said, anything that I thought could go wrong with mine after reading the forums to see whats gone wrong with other peeps cars. Since Baconbuttyman has a 1.8 saloon and one of mine is a 2.5 Auto Tourer his list is going to be different to mine. eg I have a spare pair of new self levelling shocks and a complete used Tailgate for the tourer which wouldnt be a lot of use to a 1.8 saloon.

It also depends on how much spare capital anyone is prepared to tie up and what storage space they have available.

TBH I dont think any essential spares are unavailable at the moment and situation probably wont change for a few years yet as long as X Part stays in the game.

you are right but the situation may well turn quite fast as the cars become uneconomic to repair (remember the majority of 75/ZT are worth well under £2.5k) demand for what are often very expensive new parts will dry up whilst DIY people scavenge what they can from scrap yards instead
