Rear screens and movement cut out on hi line.
Hi all,
I noticed today that if I stop my car with the footbrake, no tv. If I put the hand brake on, tv!!. Does this mean that my only obstacle to taking a signal from the dash screen to rear headrest monitors, without the signal cutting out when I move, is a simple switch located in the handbrake cover??. Hope so, but I'm sure it can't be that easy to bypass. |

Note to all:
No offence mate, but I don't think anyone would want to willing put this sort of info out. It is illegal to have the TV switched on when moving. I do believe the system is more complex than just a hand brake switch, but anyone publishing info on how to bypass these fail safes on a public forum is in for a spanking if Mr.Plod is watching.....

It also knows that you are moving so just adjusting the handbrake switch doesn't work!

I'm afraid we cannot condone watching TV on the move or been seen to recommending it or a How To for adapting the Car to do this, on our Club Forums.

Yes I agree
Guys, I fully agree with you and my intention is not to be able to watch on the move, that clearly would be very stupid. I am trying to find a way around fitting a totaly seperate DVD player and screens (mainly due to budget) although I am starting to think that a full seperate install is the only way.
Cheers for the concern anyway. |

You can upgrade to a DVD-based unit from BMW but I'm not sure of the exact ins-and-outs of doing this. As for seperate screens, again this (was) an option during ZT/75 production but I do not know how easily this could be done as a retrofit. I suppose it all hangs around the fact of if you want to maintain OEM looks/equipment or if you don't mind a aftermarket look.
I think Lightpainter as an aftermarket DVD install with seperate screens and another member on here has an OEM system (but I forget who now). Someone will be along to advise accordingly.... |

The Genuine Rover one was at the time £1500 option and costs that or even more buying all the OEM bits to retrofit.
A seperate DVD player with 2 LCD screens and headphones is the best way to go at a much, much cheaper route. These can be fitted into (expensive), or strapped around headrests and there are some that completely cover the headrest. Lightpainter has a system similar to that if you look at any of his posts you will see a picture of it. Drop him a PM if he does not see this thread, I'msure he will tell you about it. |

Yes you can bypass the TV on the move function, but it is one of those sad things BMW owners spend a fortune on special cables to do.
I like to think we are a little bit more adult and realise the stupidity of such actions. The Hi-Line system does not really support AV out or aditional screens easily Plus I can assure you it is not worth the effort you have probably realised how poor the reception is already, can you imagine losing the picture every few miles and then the sound after about 5-10 miles, you end up looking at the screen to retune almost constantly! The easiest option for purely rear screens is a third party system. The Hi-Line system does have AV in and Reversing Camera inputs via the TV tuner but both are limited to mono audio! |

I can thoroughly recommend the Venturer 8.5" DVD set up that straps to the headrests. Well made, good sound and excellent picture quality. Battery pack and remote included. Halfords £199.99:

Rear screen and movement cut off sensors
Keith,
yes I know what you mean, you are right about the reception!! I think I will go for an aftermarket seperate system, maybe build a mount in the boot so it can be acessed through the ski hatch, kind of stealth but reachable while on the move. Cheers for all your help. Oh yes, I have been trying to find a post about connecting Ipods. I have read it before but can't fing it. It was about connectors but not the connects2 version, something like dennison ice or similar. Any ideas where the post is?? |
