![]() Hi,
I'm looking for some help here. I have recently brought a 2004 75 manual CDT Tourer but the MPG is not great. On a long run I'm getting 43 mpg and round town that drops to 36 and that's driving carefully. The car has a genuine 75,000 miles on it. It pulls like a train and is smooth as you like. I had a diesel 75 tourer about 5 years ago and always got round the 50 mpg from that. The engine temp only gets to just the bottom of the temp symbol on the temp gauge unless I'm sitting in traffic for 10 mins or so when it will reach the 9 o'clock mark so I will be fitting the thermostat mod this weekend.. how much difference does a cool running engine make to mpg? What should I check that can improve my mpg? ![]() Thanks in advance for your help. |

![]() You need to have a look around on here there is a cheap fix for a failed thermostat using a Renault in pipe thermostat, about £10 IIRC
Quick to fit too as you just slide it into the radiator hose. Then see if this improves your MPG Chris

![]() My maximum temp via the on board diagnostics was 74C, after the mod the consumption improved by about 3 mpg. Other owners have reported greater improvements. Even if you dial reaches the quarter too it merely means that your temp is somewhere between 75-100C so it looks as though you are certainly running too cool. You should clean the EGR assembly out too
as it is almost certainly clogged with gunk. Afterwards plug the end of the thin flexible pipe so that the valve does not work in the future and the EGR will stay clean. Wear gloves! |

![]() Check out landyzone.co.uk.
The Freelander section forum has lots of threads on 'how to' things, esp the EGR and the PCV. TD4 BMW M47R - same engine - same problems - same fix. ![]() |
