VW iD3 goes up in flames.
Yikes! This is not good news for VW's brand new BEV the iD3, It burst into flames just as the owner unplugged it from a kerbside charger in Groningen in the Netherlands.

The Chevy Bolt EV built between 2017-2020 (I'm not 100% sure of those dates) has been recalled to replace the Battery packs & Hyundai have recalled the Kona EV to have the battery packs of 77,000Kona ev's replaced too with costs of $900 million split 60-40 with the battery maker LG Chem.

If you search 'lithium ion battery fires', there seem to be a lot of them. At least forty Tesla megabattery fires, and many vehicles too. This is also why many carriers refuse to accept or apply special measures for Li cells.
My brother in law handed a Golf ID3 back after only a few days because the range was much less than claimed. With a brand new car he was unable to drive from Dumfries to Southport on a full charge. When he found a charger, it was out of commission. But spontaneously bursting into flames is a different issue altogether. |

Yep, we should just keep driving round in our safe cars with 80 litres of petrol under the floor
Some electric cars will catch fire, and because it's a new technology it will hit the news however petrol cars lead the way when it comes to combusting, we're just so used to it now it doesn't make the front page!

Blimey! As of yesterday GM are now recalling all Bolt evs to replace the battery packs including the packs already made for 2022 vehicles which will cost a further $1billion to rectify , Looks like LG Chem are being thrown under the bus for these faulty pouch cells which are spread across 10's of thousands of car packs including the Jaguar iPace, Audi e-tron, Porsche Taycan & other Volvo bev models

Maybe not battery burning problem but definitely a battery car problem.
My next door neighbour recently got a BMW 530E, electric range was quoted on a full charge as over 30 miles, he works in Burton and can charge the car at work so he thought that's perfect, in the real world he is achieving only 18 miles before he has to switch to petrol, the car has been back to BMW about 6 times up to yet for various electrical problems and its only two months old, he is not a happy ev owner. LI batteries are banned from road transport where my friend works as well. Maybe the billions being spent on replacing these batteries should have been put into R&D instead of racing to get a product out of the door before it's ready. |

Yes you're right, From what I've been reading the dis-assembled pouch cells they've been inspecting from faulty battery packs show a manufacturing defect that should have been picked up in quality control. Very expensive mistake
