  1. Start the engine from cold.
  2. Press the windscreen demist button on the air con. control panel.
  3. Get out of the car and walk to the radiator grille.
  4. Can you hear (and see) the fan running continuously?

Please report back.

Hi Simon,

I just did as you suggested and checked and the fan was not spinning round.

So this looks like it could be my problem then.

Regards,
Dave

As far as 108°C at the lights is concerned: yes!

When you look through the radiator grille at the fan blades, do you have the silver rectangular resistor mounted on the shrouding at the two o'clock position?

Just had another look, its quite hard to see as the black plastic surround inside the front bumper/grill.

But I can see a black plug with what looks like a brown and black wire going into what looks like a little grey box is tis what you mean?

Looks like mine has the old style motor as it has the fixing holes but no resistor.

I might pop up the garage tomorrow as they have some of the bits from the car my engine was donated from so maybe I can scavenge something off that one, not sure if they put my cooling fan back in or one off the doner car which was a later 04 model I think they swapped out the rad as mine was in a worse condition.

A lot of garages don't test the fan on all speeds before fitting them (most don't know how to!!)

For example it's amazing the amount of 1.8's which have had head gasket work done and the cooling fan is still dead when they give it back to the owner

Good idea; if they have the fan system from the 2004 donor car it might be useful to you.

Failing that, if your current fan has no resistor, as you have observed, then it's a three speed unit with a worn out motor brush or two. If you're a committed DIY-er these can be renewed very cheaply. If not, you're looking at either a second-hand MGR 2 speed system which will need its resistor upgrading to the 'gold' type, or Jules' aftermarket model. All of these options involve removing the front bumper assembly and electrical work.
