Failing that, if your current fan has no resistor, as you have observed, then it's a three speed unit with a worn out motor brush or two. If you're a committed DIY-er these can be renewed very cheaply. If not, you're looking at either a second-hand MGR 2 speed system which will need its resistor upgrading to the 'gold' type, or Jules' aftermarket model. All of these options involve removing the front bumper assembly and electrical work.

Thanks Simon.

Been up garage today and the fan assembly is the one with the Silver Resistor, they said they can swap it out for me on Friday, as need car to drive down London Saturday. Will have to sort the resistor upgrade a bit later on as doubt I will be able to get one before Friday morning. But think that would be something I can do myself when I have a bit more time.

Before they do, check for electrical continuity through the silver resistor. They are notorious for failing 'open circuit' and you wouldn't want to break down with overheating on your way to the smoke would you.

Yes, that's the one, but you might consider supporting club trader Jules who has offered advice on your problem and would appreciate your business.

Default Missing water

Chaps

This is a very interesting thread for me as I discovered last weekend that Shagwell (my Chagall blue ZT190) likes a drink, but appears not to be dropping fluid. I know the fan works, and I had the belts and pump replaced 2 years ago. The V is dry and there is no signs of leakage around the thermostat which had been replaced about 3 years ago.

Have bought some inlet manifold gaskets in case this weekends research shows that coolant is getting into a combustion chamber, or 2.....

Will feedback what I find

Paul

Hi Paul,

Some ideas for you:
  • Are you overfilling the expansion tank? The 'max' marker is inside, towards the bottom.
  • You say that the fan works. Have you checked that it starts at 100° using the IPK diagnostics?
  • Check the normal running temperature using the same method. It should be in the low nineties except when stationary.
  • Who did the timing belt & coolant pump renewal? The system may not have been bled properly (here's the official method).
