Hi Thomas. I owned two SD1’s. First was a white 2.6 that took us to Germany a few times. Being a heavy car, the mpg was not very good even on a long run like that. Around 29/30 mpg. Then I bought a 3.5 V8 Vanden Plas. A much better car all round. When going to Germany it used to do around 32/33 mpg.I should not tell you this, but, when coming back from Germany one time, we got from South Mimms service ‘s on the M25 to home at Great Bar, Birmingham, in one hour ten minutes. We were travelling anywhere between 90-115 mph when no one was behind us at 2.30 in the morning with hardly anyone about. That was in the late 70’s .early 80’s. The only car that followed us was member of the Vauxhall’s family, and that passed us as we slowed down to come off the M6 at Great Barr. Aaahhh the good old days.

Congratulations to Thomas. All this talk about BL brings back memories of my garage days back in the 80’s and early 90’s. Anyone tried to explain the choke to a new driver today?

Hi Jules. The short answer is ‘no’. He has also sold the SLK. He has now got a ‘hand warmer’. I think his need for speed has got up and gone. He has only just gone back to work after being off from an abdominal injury and operation. 14 months off work don’t do the finances much good i’m Afraid. Thanks for asking. Obviously we have not been able to get over there last year, and he was coming over four times but it all went up in smoke with this virusBetter luck later this year perhaps. Could do with a nice long drive..
