Hi, I'm after some advice with my Rover 75s auto gearbox.
The car is 53 plate 2.5 with 122k miles. The auto box has performed flawlessly until now. Today I had the car serviced, oil, filters, coolant, auxiliary belts and auto gearbox oil. The upshot is the car seems fine except for it loosing reverse, which is a pain. Reverse engages with the slight bump? as expected but then nothing happens. I'll be re-reading this thread again shortly(it's been a long day). I wonder if this is a symptom of a cracked reverse piston or the wrong bolt was removed during the drain process? Next I'll need to think about how to repair. In the meantime any advice or thoughts are welcome Cheers, John. |

There is a very specific procedure... search the forum for ATF and you should find the how to's...

Does sound like either to much to little, wrong fluid or not bled properly, Worse case it's uncovered a cracked reversing piston

Klarzy, I know the procedure well i've done it twice. Whether the garage have done it spot on i can't be sure. I'll quiz them on the brake band bolt on Monday.
I brought the car down to London last night, 160 perfect miles, in-fact the box was very smooth in forward gears, parking was a pain NigelOBB, could be the piston, its a high milage car. Good points you make and tbh its hard to tell if the job has been done right unless you do it yourself but the mechanic described the fill and drain procedure very well. Perhaps simply the change of oil gave the piston that last little nudge. How difficult is it to change the reverse piston? - This is where things get tricky, who do i trust to do the job right? It might be possible to arrange help from members - i'm happy to pay a good hourly rate. Unfortunately I don't have the facilities to get the car on ramps and do the work myself. I do feel a bit stuck between a rock and a hard place Anyhow next steps are to get back to Shropshire and check exactly what work was done and then formulate a plan of action. I guess if it turns out worthwhile to attempt to fix the piston then it might be worth overhauling the solenoids too? Cheers, John Last edited by salop75; 14th August 2014 at 16:01.. |

A quick update. The car was driven down to London and then Sheffield (without Reverse) with no issues what so ever, purred along.
This morning 'EP' on the dash and the autobox seems reticent to change up, or rather the engine is under powered. Have left it a while and will go and check again. I think the car is about to take a trick back to the garage who last worked on it, but obviously my milage may vary with a 'it broke whilst in your care, you fix it approach!' attitude. John |

That's a good idea keep us posted.
There is a good guide about changing piston, in the how to section.. Also found this http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...d.php?t=189067.. It's important gear box is run up to the correct temp when checking oil.. Hope you get it sorted out, keep us posted

Fascinating thread! Anyone who dares to strip and repair an autobox at home gets my vote! Every manual I have ever read says "for autobox repairs - take it to a specialist. This work is beyond the scope of this manual and requires special equipment." or similar. No longer will I regard autoboxes as the work of conjurors and magicians, thanks to you, Einar.

This was done nearly 6 years ago, and this autobox has done 16000miles performed well since that. It might be on time to replace the ATF fluid |
